I graduated in 1965. I became a licensed School Secretary and my first job was in Tilden. It certainly has changed since my time, unfortunately, not for the best. It was one school, not four or five and functioned quite well. I am sorry to hear that Tilden High School no longer exists. I received an excellent education there.

I have fond memories of Tilden H.S., which I attended from 1957 - 1960. I played football for three years. I played halfback for Bernie Mars, who was Coach of the Year in 1959, when Ronnie Bliey--the other halfback, broke the NYC scoring record, and we played for the NYC championship. Great memories.::Sometimes I think about my girlfriend, Sharon Barrell, who was a cheerleader. I'm tempted to ring her up at RN 3-1451, although I'm not sure if she's still upstairs. Her parents probably needed to have some privacy after a while. I wonder if she'd like to go to a movie next Saturday on Flatbush Avenue . . .::

Samuel J. Tilden High School phase-out was completed June 30, 2010. The Tilden Campus (the existing building), as it is now referred to, consists of 3 new mini High Schools.
{ Click here for more information }

There are many reasons why Tilden was phased out. The primary ones are that Tilden had a low four-year graduation rate and was plagued by safety and security problems. However, if you question recent graduates, you will hear their positive views pertaining to Tilden's quality of education. Problems over the last few years should in no way diminish the fact that Tilden, over many decades, provided quality education for tens of thousands of students. We hope that this website will help to revivify the good reputation that Samuel J. Tilden High School has had since 1930.

The "CELEBRATION OF TILDEN" reunion at the El Caribe on May 27, 2010 was a grand event. We all had a great time getting together with friends, students and staff who were part of our lives in past years. I was thrilled to see former collegues and students, who are so dear to me. Others I spoke to at the event expressed their joy of being able to reunite with friends of the past.

We at tildenmemories.com want to express our sincere gratitude to Debra Sylvester who coordinated this spectacular event and made this all possible. She put in an enormous amount of time and energy making the "Celebration of Tilden" such a success. Thank You Ms. Sylvester for a Job Well Done.

Class of 2000. I will say when I found out Tilden is closing. A soft spot was hit. The memories, the friends, the relationships I build. It's surreal. The amazing part is you never realize how time flies, it's been 10 years for me. Looking back, Tilden played a major part in my development as an asset to society; the teachers, deans and staff.

Also to all teachers I am sorry I didn't show you my true potential that I have. If I wasn't so negative to myself I think my high school experience would have been even better as well. Went to Tilden from '75 to '79 and had our 30th reunion last year. It was wonderful to see all of my LPC classmates again. So sad to see Tilden leave, but the memories will always remain, and what memories they are!

JEFF LUSTBERG

I'm a graduate of the 1969 class. I currently work for the Department of Veteran's affairs in Tampa Florida. I passed the school, taking photos on 06/05/10. I was going to a memorial service at Holy Cross Cemetary down the block. From the outside the school looked the same. I'm sad to hear of the school's closing, and would like to know the reason behind it. If there is a reunion of the class of '69 I'd love to attend. Anybody that recognizes my name can reach me @ JLUSTBER@TAMPABAY.RR.COM

Class of 1978.. I've always said that the better part of my life was spent at Tilden High. I can remember how my twin sister and I would confuse the hell out of Ms. J. Kaplan and Ms. L. The classes, teachers, friendships and the socialization it saddens me to know that legacy is at a close.

Just wanted to update my information so any of my former Tilden classmates who borrowed money from me can contact me and finally pay me back before our 50th reunion in June 2015.::::I have been living in the greater Miami area since the mid to late 1960's I am so proud of the fact that I was raised by 2 wonderful parents whose roots were firmley planted in Brooklyn, My Father Dave just turned 100 years old and is still sharp as a tack and my mother Fay will be 95. Like Lou Gerig from the yankees I consider rmyself one of the luckiest men on the face of the earth.I still am able to speak to mom and dad everyday. My former 1964 &65 football teammates along with the son of our former coach Bernie mars were instrumental in getting Tilden field re-named in Coach Mars memory in 2005. Coach Murray Adler is still alive and well living in Boynton Beach Fl. he is now in his mid 80's and has a wonderful sense of humor. I have acomplished alot in my 65+ years and of course my greatest achievement is to see my 2 wonderful children grow to be responsible adults with families of their own with their own children It's our circle of life and I am happy it began in Brooklyn I hope all of you live long lives and keep these Tilden memories alive there will never be another school in America like it.

I was a member of the Class of 1983. I was saddened to hear that Tilden as we have known it has become non existant. I entered Tilden H.S as a shy introverted girl and came out as a woman. The quality of education that i received at this fine institution of learning is what helped me to pursue my studies in Criminal Justice. I was fortunate to have been taught by some great teachers such as Dr Largmann, Mr Jackson. Ms Skolnick, Mr Leventhal and Maxine Jones, Mr Statesman, just to name a few. Tilden will forever reign in my heart and I am so proud to have been a student. Mr Everett Kerner was principal during my years at Tilden H.S and he was such a humble and kind man and I will not forget him either. THANKS !!!

Class of 1960 - Just checked out the Tilden web site and found a photograph of a tree in front of a window. I laughed out loud when I saw it. Why? Because I used to look out that third floor window during chemistry class, contemplating how on earth someone had managed to hang a pair of sneakers on one of those tree limbs! LOL! It all came flooding back, the school song, classmates (you were all precious), Principal Margulies admonishing "you soph-o-mores" to do something or other.....etc, etc, etc..

I graduated Tilden in June 1963 and have great memories of my high school years. Some of you may be interested in a book I recently published. It's called Road to Sunrise, and is about my unique childhood, growing up in Brooklyn and the Catskills with a large, extended family. My years at Tilden are a highlight to the book. You can read an overview on authorhouse.com or amazon.com by typing in Road to Sunrise Olivia Beck. The book is more reasonably priced on authorhouse.com, and is availble as an ebook and also on Kindle (Amazon) and the Nook (Barnes and Noble). If you would like to know more about the book, please feel free to contact me. I would love to hear from Tilden alumni! Read my post on the Tilden Forum under "Introduce Yourself"

Hey: I went by Tilden last August when I was back East with my daughter and son-in-law, both of whom are California natives and were curious about my roots. We were in New Jersey for a family affair.:: Starting with a drive over the Verrazano, through Coney Island, Brighton Beach, Sheepshead Bay, then to the Belt Parkway Flatbush exit; took a detour over the (Gil Hodges)bridge (aka Marine Parkway), by Riis Park, then back through Mill Basin. Circled the beloved Glenwood Projects then on to Tilden...:: Turned out that student were taking Regents that day...I was happy to hear that NY State still required them. :: Circled around Tilden to the gym exit, then of course to the running track to check out the all-weather surface. To my surprise, it was a THREE LANE TRACK, by far the narrowist I've ever seen... (Biographical note: I basically lived on the track, left lots of blood, sweat, tears, and laughs there, and it sowed the seeds of my lifetime dream come true as a high school track/cross country coach, although in Los Angeles, where my girls's team won the L.A. City Championship in track last year and the boys won the LA City cross country title last fall...):: It was great to see that the field is now called Bernie Mars Field, after the coach of many a City Championship team in the fifties and sixties. Could we call the Track, the Joel Hochheiser Track? :: Joel was our coach, and was an inspiration to all of us. He went on to set national distance records with his team at Wagner High School in Staten Island. :: At a gettogether about 18 years ago, he confided that he didn't really learn how to coach till after he left Tilden. Obviously, as we were strong in the half mile, but not national class as were his StatenIslanders.:: would love to hear from Tilden Alumni who ran track at any time at Tilden, and their stories of the influence that it may have had on their lives (+ or -). From any era, boys girls, distance or sprints. Love to All...(Irv Schoenfeld or Henry Ginsberg please respond) !
